What is skin color anyway?

Let's start with the fact that there's actually no such thing as skin color. There is a skin tone.

The difference is that within the skin tone, there are infinite different colors.

In fact, remember that if we place the same color along any surface, it will appear

flat and won't give us the feeling of three-dimensionality of our face or body.

Therefore, every area (even the smallest) needs to be composed of a different color.

Pay attention to the section from a Rembrandt painting in the following photograph.

Notice how each area, even the smallest one,

is composed of a different color and how this gives us, the viewers, the feeling

of three-dimensionality.

What is the palette of colors we need?

Every artist chooses and uses a slightly different color palette, and of course there are no rules or "laws" for choosing the palette.

Nevertheless, since we are looking for certain tone, we need to choose colors that will help us aim in that direction.

The color palette I like to use

My palette is usually made up of the following colors:

  • Titanium White

  • Yellow Ocher

  • Ultramarine Blue

  • Vermillion Red

  • Indian Red

  • Burnt Umber

I make the black from a combination of Burnt Umber + Ultramarine Blue

I make the green from a combination of Yellow Ocher + Black (made as above)
